28 May 2014- 15 June 2014 The premiere and the first round of the performances of “MEPHISTO” by Ariane Mnouchkine and Klaus Mann, under the direction of Nikos Mastorakis

The premiere and the first round of the performances of “MEPHISTO” by Ariane Mnouchkine and Klaus Mann, under the direction of Nikos Mastorakis, will finally be staged at the impressive neoclassical building of the Piraeus Municipal Theatre. The National Theatre has selected this play to complete its drama repertoire of the current winter season.

The Municipal Theatre, which was officially inaugurated after its construction, on the 9th April 1895, opened its doors for the public again on the 22nd October 2013, after 10 years of silence, during which the necessary works of renovation were done and thus, marked a new era in the cultural life of Piraeus. Its stage, with its unique mechanisms of baroque theatre, has nothing to envy from the decoration and finesse of the European theatres. It has got a central stage of 600 seats, 23 magnificent galleries and a two-floor foyer, suitable to host drama and musical performances of high requirements.

The current Artistic Director of the theatre is Mr. Takis Tzamargias, born in Piraeus, teacher and director, with a long significant activity in the cultural scene of the city, who visualises to render the Theatre “a port … for the culture”. For the first year of the operation of the theatre, Mr. Tzamargias has selected a rich and qualitative programme with drama performances, concerts and exhibitions, for children, young and adults.

In this specific place, where in the past the most important persons of the Greek theatre (actors and directors) and music have made their appearance, the first performances of “MEPHISTO” will be staged until the 15th June, 2014. The play is going to be part of the repertoire the NATIONAL THEATRE is going to perform during the next theatre season, as well, at the stage “MARIKA KOTOPOULI” of REX theatre.

THE ARTBASSADOR has licensed the stage performances of the play on the account of ROWOHLT VERLAG and SACD, who administer the authors’ royalties of Klaus Mann and Ariane Mnouchkine, respectively.
