AY, CARMELA! by José Sanchis Sinisterra

At Metaxourgeio Theatre, since 13 December!

The brutal days of Spanish Civil War, through the story of Carmela and Paulino a couple of travelling performers, who are forced to improvise a theatrical performance in honor of Dictator Franco’s troops, in order to survive. An entertaining performance, with an unpredictable and tragic ending!

Written by the notable Spanish playwright José Sanchis Sinisterra in 1986 and premiered in Spain (1987), “Ay,Carmela!” has become one of the most emblematic works of contemporary Spanish theater.

Described as a “darkly hilarious and poignant testimonial to the futility of war”, this highly symbolic play is an inspired and absolutely striking look at the absurdity of life and death in wartime.
