FAUST by Charles Gounod

GREEK NATIONAL OPERA -STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION CULTURAL CENTER 7,8,9,10,12,14,16 & 17 APRIL.

The Greek National Opera presents Charles Gounod’s five act grand opéra "Faust" –one of the most celebrated works in the French repertoire– for eight unique performances. This great production, which premiered at the Athens Concert Hall in 2012, now returns to the GNO to be presented at the Stavros Niarchos Hall for the first time, conducted by Pierre Dumoussaud and directed by Renato Zanella.

A shining example of the French grand opéra genre, Charles Gounod’s Faust premiered in 1859 in Paris, remaining the most popular opera worldwide until the Second World War and the first work of its genre to enjoy such a huge international success.

In this GNO’s astonishing production, the director, choreographer, former director of the GNO’s Ballet and current director of the National Ballet of Slovenia Renato Zanella, creates an evocative atmosphere by transferring the action to an old, empty lecture hall. There, all alone, in front of blackboards densely inscribed with wisdom, the elderly Faust, will meet Méphistophélès, who will convince him to sign a deal with the devil.

THE ARTBASSADOR provided the Orchestra with the music material of the work, on behalf of the Publishing House WISE MUSIC GROUP.
