THE WHALES OF AUGUST by David Berry

A deeply moving drama about two elderly sisters who discover that it's never too late to change!

“THE WHALES OF AUGUST”, by Obie Award-winning playwright David Berry, premiered at the Center Stage Theatre in Baltimore, in 1980. After receiving excellent reviews, it moved to New York City in 1982 and was staged at the WPA Theatre, Off-Broadway. In 1987, the play was adapted for the big screen by David Berry, directed by Lindsay Anderson and starring Bette Davis and Lillian Gish.

An anthem to life and devotion, this marvelous story is a touching portrait of two elderly widowed sisters, Libby and Sarah, spending their annual summer in a seaside house in Maine. Sarah is sunny, optimistic and healthy, looking forward to seeing the whales cross the shore again, while Libby, stuck in a wheelchair and almost blind, is cynical and mean-spirited, having no expectations from life. Reminiscing their past and their youth, they confront the losses and tribulations of their long lives and the grievances and misunderstandings that bittered their relationship. Their differences are huge, as well as their bond. A bond which will lead them to discover that it is never too late to make a new start in life!

David Berry’s marvelous moving play, “The Whales of August”, production of “CHORA SA”, is being hosted at the stage of Chora Theatre/Athens, since 19 October 2019, directed by Petros Zoulias and translated by Adonis Galeos, in an absolutely sensational performance.
