Mexican Arturo Márquez turns 70 on 20 December!

His Danzon No2 is probably the first thing that comes to mind when people hear  the name Márquez. While this work has become a true classic over time, Márquez has also written many more equally fantastic compositions which are not to be missed. After studying in Mexico, Paris and the USA, Márquez finally made his international breakthrough in the 90s with his Danzones series, inspired by an elegant Cuban dance that migrated to Veracruz, Mexico.

Since then, his music has been played by famous musicians all over the world and he is widely recognized as one of the most important Mexicans composers of his generation. Arturo Marquez has been the recipient of several awards and is the first musician to be honored with the prestigious   "La Medalla De Oro De Bellas Artes de Mexico" (Gold Medal of Fine Arts of Mexico), the highest award given to artists by Mexico's Bellas Artes.

For his 70th birthday on 20 December 2020, we wish Arturo Márquez all the best –and look forward to many more new works by the Mexican composer.
