The Broadway’s Tony Award-winning musical, in its Greek premiere at Akropol Theatre!

You Can’t Stop the Beat! HAIRSPRAY, the ultimate musical comedy phenomenon is coming to Greece. Based on the 1988 John Waters’ film, with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, Hairspray premiered on Broadway in 2002 and became an instant smash hit. Having been staged throughout the world with enormous success, the multi-awarded with Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk and Theater World award play was adapted for cinema in 2007 and stands as one of the most critically and commercially successful musical films of the 2000’s.

This amazing pop-rock hit remains one of the most widely produced plays today, not only because of its wit and charm, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays. It’s a joyous tribute to an era past, following the bright, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad that teaches us all to follow our dreams passionately and fight for every human being’s equal rights.

The great production of Hairspray is being staged at Akropol Theatre/Athens, since 25 October, with 30 actors, singers, stage dancers and a live orchestra. Thanks to an impressive cast and a talented creative team, the audience will enjoy an incredibly entertaining show full of energy, joy and emotion as well. The greatly experienced Themis Marsellou undertook the translation/adaptation of the book and the lyrics in greek language and the direction of the show. Moreover, Ilias Kaloudis undertook the music teaching and orchestra conducting, Mary Tsagari the set designs, Anna Athanasiades the choreographies, Panagiota Kokkorou the costume designs, Melina Mascha the lightning and Karolos Porfyris the video design and projections.

Leading actors: Markos Seferlis as Edna Turnblad, a character traditionally performed by a male actor, Kostas Koklas, Doretta Papadimitriou, Panayotis Petrakis, Isaias Matiaba, Katerina Sousoula, Anna Filippaki, Barbara Nempi, Marianna Gerasimidou, Vangelis Kakouriotis, together with a great team of prominent artists.
